True Bohemians Live Style.
In recent years, the Bohemian chic aesthetic has saturated the interior design market. Whether it’s Target or Kohl’s, there’s no shortage of Gypsy inspired fabrics being used to make anything from pillows, blankets, curtains, rugs, and even upholstered furniture. Unlike large companies trying to manufacture watered-down economically viable trends set by Coachella cohorts to the masses, there are some small boutiques that still offer the real thing. Live Style Marketplace & Gallery is one of those establishments.
I first discovered Live Style a few years ago while shopping for a client requesting a mid-century style sofa in an uncommonly vibrant color. Owner/Interior designer Francesca DeShae greeted me warmly and then proceeded to take me on a tour around her store. As the curator of the emporium, she was able to tell me the story behind each piece of furniture, textile and lighting fixture available for purchase. Having just received a shipping crate full of authentic Kilim rugs she’d selected while traveling overseas, we went through the stacks of hand-dyed, hand-woven, intricately patterned carpets together. Since 2009, Live Style has been servicing the West side of Los Angeles with handmade distinctive merchandise collected from around the world. A compendium of vintage and original furniture, art, table décor, textiles and accessories fill this boutique to the brim—the next discovered piece more exceptional than the last.
In addition to the retail store, Live Style also has a design studio. Francesca’s husband and business partner, Ahmad DeShae is responsible for the tastefully assembled reclaimed wood facades displayed on the walls of the studio as well as the gorgeous pieces of custom and original furniture he’s designed that are scattered about the showroom.
I did find a beautiful mint condition, mid-century sofa in a verdant green. I also bought a set of chairs carved from solid oak in the shape of orbs. Lastly, I purchased a mirror set in a distressed aluminum frame with blue accents finished in a glossy lacquer. As a designer, I depend on stores like Live Style to provide atypical luxury items that can’t be found anywhere else.
If you love Bohemian style and value authentic representations of the aesthetic instead of the bastardized versions readily available on the market, I would venture into Live Style and see what Moroccan chic really looks like.
